  An email from a Ellen Parsons in 2019 asked about her grandmother Alma Guy, daughter of Joseph Hull and Lillian Whitehorn. Alma was born a Hull, however her mother Lillian Whitehorn died and she was adopted by a family member near Buchans, NL and their last name was Guy, which she took on moving forward as Alma Guy. The 1945 Census shows a James T Guy (age 63) and wife Mabel Guy (age 57) living at Buchans. Might these be the people who adopted Alma? They seem rather old.
