- The following was taken from the book "Snowshoe & Lancet Memoirs of a Frontier Newfoundland Doctor 1937-1948" by Robert Skidmore Ecke, M.D.
November 27, 1940 After tea I sat in Mr. Earl's room. He is dying of cancer of the rectum but doesn't seem annoyed. He is only a year older than I am. He told me how lovely it was up around his home in New Bay, and how big the trees are.
December 1, 1940 ............... This morning I planned a hunting and exploring trip with Mr. Earl as my guide, for next February; he is to bring his dog teams - all he wants is his food and tobacco which I will supply. It would be fun. I like him. I only wish he was going to live more than a week.
December 4, 1940 ...............I sat with Mr. Earl while he died tonight. He just made a few faces, reached deeply for a breath or two, lifted his hand convulsively and joined his fathers. This passing never fails to be impressive. There are many manners of departure. In some the line is not sensible - in others it is like jumping a fence.
