- Charles Field was a sea captain. Born in Trinity Bay. Moved to St. John's from where he commuted by ship to Labrador during summer for fishing.

Undated Biography - Author Unknown (possibly John Oakley) :
Captain George Slade Field - "inherited his father's love of the sea. And after his education at a "Blue Coat School" he received a
commission as midshipman on board H.M.S. Spitfire that was then stationed on the coast of S. Africa. --- a boat's crew in charge of
Midshipman Field was sent on shore for water, --- they were attacked by armed natives, murdered the boat's crew, taking Field prisoner
escaped with him in b(oat) where he was kept a prisoner for some year's, then made his escape.
Upon his return to England because of his relationship to the Slades he came out to Nfld in one of their vessels & was appointed to a
position in their store at Trinity. ~ -- Before he left England for Trinity - - - letter of introduction to a Miss Elizabeth Newhook, - - - entry in
the old church books, "March 27, 1831, married George Slade Field, Bachelor of Poole, Dorset, England & Elizabeth Newhook of Trinity".
(Meantime) at his request been appointed Mate on board one of Slade's vessels - - - & in 1830 given command of the "Thomas &
Sarah", held that charge till 1833 when he was promoted as Captain of "Robert & James" in 1839 he was Captain of the "William" in
1840 he was again charge of "Robert & James". Later in 1845 the "Dorothy".
1861 Slade & Co declared insolvent. "Captain Field , - - lost his position together with several hundred pounds on Slade's books,
these losses coupled with fa(ct) that a few months previous, his dwelling house & contents were destroyed by fire left him well nigh
penniless. - . In 1864 offered position of Schoolmaster at Bonaventure, by Church of England Board of Education, accepted it & moved
to Bonaventure. - - filled position along with lay reader in church till 1886, when he was called to rest aged 79 years, his wife had been
called to rest in 1864, age 75. They are buried in old Bonaventure Churchyard.
Several great grandchildren are living today. two of the old captain's sons by George & Charles became Sea Captains & two of his
daughters (Catherine & Mary) married Sea Captains. & two of his grandsons today are w(??) representatives of him & a credit to their
calling, Captain John Field of the S.S. Prospo & Captain Charles Cross one of the most useful men of fthe Steamer Department of the
Newfoundland Railway."
