From The Enclyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador:
"The eldest son ... he may have been born in New Harbour, church records giving his birthplace as 'Trinity Bay'. ... son of Elizabeth and Charles Newhook. ... Newhook was killed in St. John's in the spring of 1839 when he fell from the mast of a wrecked vessel on which he had been working".

From "Pot Heads and Drumhoops, A Folk History of New Harbour, Trinity Bay" (1995), by Garry Cranford with Raymond Hillier: Charles Newhook II was the town's leading citizen. When his wife died, a scribe at Trinity recorded, "Monday, 2nd April, 1810, Charles Newhook arrived from New Harbour in a schooner with his wife's corpse on board".
------------

Charles Newhook (second) was in St.John's in the spring of 1839, when he fell from a vessel's mast and was killed. "The Times", a city newspaper, in it's issue of May 15, 1839, has the following news item: -

"Died at this place Monday last of concussion of the brain, accasioned by an accidental fall while engaged in the duties of his proffession, Mr. Charles Newhook, aged 65 years, for upwards of thirty years master shipbuilder in Trinity and neighbourhood for Messrs John Bingley Garland and Co. Mr. Newhook was a most skillful, active and persevering man, and his death is sincerely regretted by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance."

The issue of May 14, 189, of "The Royal Gazette", reports the death more fully, thus: -

"In the afternoon of yesterday, the coroner was called in to hold an inquest on the body of Mr. Charles Newhook, S., of Trinity, who was accidentally killed by falling from the mast of a wrecked vessel at the South Side of this harbour, a verdict to this effect was returned by the jury. The deeased Mr. Newhook was well known and much respected both in this community and in Trinity Bay."

He was actually in his sixty-first year, and was buried in the Anglican cemetary at Trinity.

1852 "About 1852-55, Racheal Knight, daughter of a boarding house operator at St.John's, Nfld., married Jonas Newhook. They moved to Jacksons Cove soon after and were [the] first Newhooks there. With them, there moved from St. John's and settled in Jacksons Cove, three of her brothers, Jessie, Henry and Temple Knight. They were supposedly the first Knights north. (*This is contradicted by the Land Grant list unless the land was granted before the move and may have been for sawmill purposes.) After the boarding house burnt, the elderly proprietors moved to be with their children in Jacksons Cove and died there. (Must be John and Mary Ann.)" End Robert Knight's notes

The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Charles Newhook:
"Newhook came to Newfoundland from Europe around 1777 to work for the mercantile firm of Benjamin Lester. An 1808 note in the register at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Trinity indicates that the name Newhook is from the French Huguenot name Nuik, and it is generally agreed that the first Charles Newhook was of French extraction." Several Newhook researchers no longer believe the validity of a Huguenot connection.

St. Paul's Anglican Church records say that "C. W. Newhook Sen(r) was buried on November 24, 1799."

N. C. Crewe: Charles Newhook died at Trinity relatively young. The epitaph on his headstone, in St. Paul's churchyard there, reads as follows: "In memory of Charles Newhook, who departed this life the 18th November 1799, aged 47 years. Also of his daughter, Sarah Newhook, who departed this life the 7th November 1798, aged 2 years and 9 months."

There is an excellent narrative of the Newhook family history at
http://members.lycos.co.uk/spadespages/family/ref_new_nimshi.html

Charles Newhook (first) died at Trinity relatively Young. The epitaph on his headstone, in St.Paul's churchyard there, reads as follows...
"In memory of Charles Newhook, who departed this life November 18, 1799, aged 47 years. Also of his daughter, Sarah Newhook, who departed this life November 7, 1798, aged 2 years and 9 months."

Shipwright. Born New Harbour T.B., son of Martha (Penny) and Charles Newhook qv. Married Rachel Knight. From a long line of renowned shipbuilders, Newhook as a young man settled in Jackson's Cove, Green Bay, where he continued the family tradition."

There may be some confusion here. John Robert(s) Wallace Knight NEWHOOK and Charles William NEWHOOK don't seem to fit here. Notice Charles' birth date compared to those of the parents.

From: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlcav/knightree.htm
(1823-1901). Shipwright. Born New Harbour T.B., son of Martha (Penny) and Charles Newhook qv. Married Rachel Knight. From a long line of renowned shipbuilders, Newhook as a young man settled in Jackson's Cove, Green Bay, where he continued the family tradition. His barque Fleetwing, a 249-ton vessel, was described in the Telegraph of St. John's: ``...coppered high to the bends, of a very superior build, all juniper frame, topsides, rails and covering boards of Baltimore white oak, keelson of white oak and Demerara greenheart with greenheart treenails. This vessel will bear the strictest examination and is, without exception, the fastest vessel in the trade.'' In his sailing autobiography, When Ships Were Ships, Captain William Morris Barnes termed the barque ``the fastest thing ever sailed salt water''. It apparently made numerous trips from Harbour Grace to Pernambuco in record time. Newhook also built the Tasso, another vessel of legendary speed. J.R.
