| 1759 | The following was taken from the book "Snowshoe & Lancet Memoirs of a Frontier Newfoundland Doctor 1937-1948" by Robert Skidmore Ecke, M.D. November 27, 1940 After tea I sat in Mr. Earl's room. He is dying of cancer of the rectum but doesn't seem annoyed. He is only a year older than I am. He told me how lovely it was up around his home in New Bay, and how big the trees are. December 1, 1940 ............... This morning I planned a hunting and exploring trip with Mr. Earl as my guide, for next February; he is to bring his dog teams - all he wants is his food and tobacco which I will supply. It would be fun. I like him. I only wish he was going to live more than a week. December 4, 1940 ...............I sat with Mr. Earl while he died tonight. He just made a few faces, reached deeply for a breath or two, lifted his hand convulsively and joined his fathers. This passing never fails to be impressive. There are many manners of departure. In some the line is not sensible - in others it is like jumping a fence. | Earle, Howard William (I1283)

Source of birthday very difficult to read. Handwritten on the flyleaf of an old bible. At the time of her death, she lived at 597 O'Connor St. and was widowed. Age 72years 9 months. This would indicate she was born in 1877, not 1875. Source: Ancestry.com. Ottawa, Canada, Beechwood Cemetery Registers, 1873-1990 [database on-line]. | 1775 | The register of Protestant marriages in the District of Bedford, Quebec 1804-1879 says he was the 2nd son of John Boothe and Eleanor Rooney (Rawley?) Moved to Ottawa Valley in 1854. He and his wife operated a single splitter and sold them roadside by night. In 1858 he obtained the contract to supply the wood for the Parliament Buildings. By 1900 he employed 1500 men in his sawmills. He evenutally built and operated three railways, managed a fleet of steamboats, and held the largest volume of timber rights in the British Empire. There is no definitive biography on Booth, partly because he did not leave much of a paper trail, and many of his records were burned on his death at his request. The Algerian Embassy in Canada is located in the Fleck/Paterson House in the Sandy Hill neighbourhood of Ottawa. It is located at 500 Wilbrod Street. The house was built in between 1901 and 1903 by Ottawa lumber baron J.R. Booth who built it for his daughter Gertrude and her husband Andrew Fleck. "First time Aunt I. saw him, he was m ud to the knees. Worked with the men. Little short man. last time she saw him he was sick. Large room. Nursemaid. Way over in corner. He wore red night cap. Looked like Santa C. The register of Protestant Marriages in BEdford, Quebec 1804-1879 mentions a Charlotte Booth marrying Samuel Hendson McElroy on 12 Oct 1857. Birth marriage for both. It says she was the daughter of John Booth, the 1st. | Booth, John Rudolphus (I69)

| 1786 | There is confusion about Ralph's year of birth (1860, 1864, 1868, 1869 or 1870). I'll use the date on his headstone. C.W. Strong's Memoirs: "My father, Ralph Frederick William Strong, was born at Twillingate, Newfoundland, into a family of three sons and three daughters. His father earned his living as a cooper. ... One brother left home young, headed West, and was never heard of again. One sister married a man named White of Twillingate, where she settled down. ... Another sister, Fannie, married a man named LeDrew. ... The third sister married a man named Lethbridge and lived at an outport of the same name in Bonivista Bay." Ralph's will can be found in Volume 13, Folio 450 of the Supreme Court probate records. Ralph and Martha's headstone at General Protestant Cemetary, St. John's, sent to me by Christine Cook Ralph Fredrick Strong, age 33 years, arrived at Ellis Island, NY on November 22, 1904 aboard the Silvia from Saint John's, Newfoundland. Likely the daughter of Leonard. | Hyde, Harriet (I44)
|
| 1788 | There is some confusion about the name of the first Strong family member to arrive in Newfoundland. He could have been George or William. Or he could have been either George William Strong or William George Strong. According to the notes of John Burge Wells (b. May 24, 1868), "George Strong and a Mr. Wells came to Newfoundland from Ringwood, Hampshire, England in 1793 and settled in Back Harbour, Twillingate". The Hampshire Record Office (HRO) lists three George Strongs, one born in 1764, one in 1780, and one in 1783. The HRO has no records for William (between 1770 and 1810) in their Parish Registers or names index. Queen Milley's notes say his name was George and that he was married three times. I don't know her source for the name George or for the claim of three marriages. She may have relied on John Wells' notes or, perhaps, the three groups of children listed in the Strong Family Bible (which is actually a Concordance). William Strong, buried May 28 1866 Twillingate age 76 yrs (bc 1790). Twillingate Methodist Parish records. | Strong, William (George) (I591)

| 1789 | There is some doubt about place of birth. Philip and Virtue Wiseman lived in Tizzards Harbour during the early 1800's. They had a daughter, Hannah Wiseman, who married William Anstey. The Wisemans' and Ansteys' later relocated to the Little Bay Islands area. 1836 Census for Tizzards Hr lists Philip Wiseman as head of a family of 10 people: 4 males under 14 years of age 2 males between 14 and 60 3 females under 14 years of age 1 female between 14 and 60. This would seem to indicate that they had eight children or 7 children and a boarder or a parent of one of the spouses. Source: http://ngb.chebucto.org/Parish/twgate1816.shtml By 1811 there were seven fishing rooms, one of which belonged to Philip Wiseman.
