Her headstone reads: "Erected by her husband in loving memory of Selena Rowsell a native of Leading Tickles who died April 21 1917 aged 65 years." Viewed Summer 2004 at Leading Tickles Cemetery (old cemetery in town)

-A Samuel Elson Rowsell born Jun 19 1875 at L.T.
-A Thomas Doyle Rowsell bc 1901.

Record as it stood before importing into Legacy (which found inconsistencies) read: Died: 1881 - which makes no sense if he had a son. Removing death date and burial date (1881 Jul 27 at Leading TIckles)

ROWSELL, Samuel Elson of Mark & Mary Jane, Leading Tickles June 19, 1875, baptised August 10, 1875 by Rev. William Pilot. Anglican Mission of Leading Tickles Baptism Records, 1866 - 1897

Am doubting that Samuel was son of Mark and Mary Jane, and also that Samuel had son Thomas Doyle Rowsell.
Some have reasoned that his second name was not Elson, but Nelson. And that he died at age 5.
Rowsell, Samuel Elson (I106)

BW:The Anglican Church Records in Botwood lists the marriage of Ann Chippett, of Leading Tickles, to Ambrose Churchill in 1869 at Tilt Cove. Possiblity that this was a 2nd marriage for Ambrose and that Ann Rowsell was deceased or that Ann Rowsell had been previously married to a Chippett. RNR: Her children were: Lydia - youngest, Emma - Married John Valentine, Jessie - died young? & Bertram. RNR: She went to live in St. John's with Uriah (her brother? first husband? Cousin?)

RNR's diary contains the following passage:
This night I visited my father's aunt commonly called by him Aunt Anne Churchill. I arrived at her house about eight fifteen p.m. She is a very nice old soul. We talked of relations and of many people who still live out upon the old "Rowsell's Island". I enjoyed the evening very much. I admire the little boy, son of Samuel Churchill, age twelve who was working hard at his radio set. To my mind, he will become something great. He's got a hold of the right end. When I was leaving, she shook my hand I can't explain it, and she kissed my cheek. She gave me a little advice. She said, "Now, Reg, my son. Don't have anything to do with girls." What do you think of that?

She was the dau of William Rowsell & Rosanna Roberts (his 2nd marriage). She did have a brother Mark Rowsell born 1871 who married Louisa Jane Rowsell. So likely a link there somewhere. The Mark 1837-1913 who married Mary Jane Penny was the son of William Rowsell and Martha Bowers per my notes, but has no baptism. Source: J. Marshall who married Martha Bowers is likely the brother of Thomas Sr and not his son. Source: B.Warford

William ROWSELL, d Apr 17 1893, died at Leading Tickles; cause of death: impotence & senility; age at death: 87 years; Religion:CE;
Occupation: planter; Birthplace: Change Islands; Buried at: Leading Tickles «tab»
NOTES: per family bible, born Dec 31 1806, the son of John & Emma (Amy) Rowsell; baptized as an ''adult'' 1821 at Change Islands. William married Martha Bowers of Nippers Harbour, Green Bay.

The Initial "R" comes from Reginald Rowsell, who referred to his great-grandafther in a notebook as Wm. R. Rowsell. I wonder if the R. stands for Reginald.

William made a valentine for his wife, Martha. It used to be hung at the old folks home in Leading Tickles, when the home was run by Harry Hollett, husband of Frances Rowsell, g-granddaughter of William. This valentine had a verse inscribed on it by William, much of which is illegible. The whereabouts of the valentine now are unknown.

1578 Samuel was a labourer at the Mercantile Premises and a member of the Church of England who lived in Paradise in 1921.

From the Twillingate Sun of Jan 22, 1921: Mr. Samuel ANSTEY jr., received a serious blow in the face on Tuesday, which had it been a little higher, might have been dangerous. He was coming out of the door of Hodge Bros Meat Store when a dog slide owned by his boy Bert, came swiftly past the door. The slide caught the corner of the door slamming it to, against Mr. ANSTEY, the iron-shod lock catching him on the cheek bone, knocking him down and for a second, stunning him. So severe was the blow that it knocked out a tooth and cut his tongue on the opposite side to which he was struck. His cheek was hurt badly, but fortunately not seriously.
Anstey, Samuel (I1427)

1579 Samuel was a tinsmith in 1921. Stuckless, Samuel Clarke (I2603)

1580 Samuel was baptized 23 June 1849, age 10 months. His birth month and year were derived from the baptism date and age. It was reported, by John Howard Strong, that Samuel died at age 22. The year he died was derived from the baptism date and his reported age. Strong, Samuel (I565)

1581 Sarah Anne was Uriah's second wife.

1586 Second name is Wesley, not Wagg, according to source, D. Hogge.
There are several references to a John Wesley Taylor who married a Clarke but not sure if this is the same person or not.

D. Hogge has John Wesley Taylor married to a Juliana Clarke (b. 1824, d. 1886). Married on 21 Dec 1847.
Taylor, John Wagg (I204)

Bemister, Emily Jane 28 Oct 1889 58 yrs

Pike, Emily Jane (I1071)

1595 See RIN 848 (Edward White) and RIN 849 (Elizabeth White) as possible parents of William. (four siblings)
Their William was baptized at Anglican Church Bonavista Jan 5 1797 along with siblings Edward, Thomas and Mary.

Edward and Elizabeth had another son Joseph baptized Nov 24 1812.

They may or may not be the parents of this William, but the names Edward and Elizabeth appear frequently in our family so I'm betting there is a connection. If this is the same William, he would have been at least 40 years old when his daughter, Elizabeth, was born. Not impossible particularly if she was the last or next to last child. He was dead when she was married which may imply that he was older when she was born.
White, William (I22)

Marsh, Carl Finney (I531)

1598 Settled at Harts Cove, South side of Twillingate. Curtis, Jane (I1536)

1599 Settled at New Bay. Speculation is that Joseph's father was George Rowsell, but no proof of this. Rowsell, Joseph (I461)

1600 She appears to have been buried with her father. The headstone reads:
". . . Capt. George Field who died 17th May 1886 aged 79 years. A native of Wareham, England. Also of his beloved daughter Elizabeth Stone who died 12th March 1887, Aged 49 years."

This makes her birth year approx. 1838. She was married to a Stone when she died. The marriage record for her and Collis suggests that she was a spinster not a widow, so Collis was her first husband.

She is listed at Ancestry.com
(http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=imanurse&id=I17080)
which lists notes her marriage to Stone on 21 Dec 1882 in Old Bonaventure, by whom she had Ada Sarah Field Stone b. Old Bonaventure, bap 17 Oct 1883 in Trinity at St. Paul's Anglican church.

This is to certify that WILLIAM JAMES COLLIS, Widower, and ELIZABETH ISABELLA FIELD?, Spinster, both of Trinity, were married at St. Paul's Church, Trinity, on this second day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two by me Benjamin Smith, Minister.
