| 1055 | Lovell's 1871 Directory for Joe Batt's Arm lists a John Wells, fisherman. John Wells was part owner of the schooner Lamentation. The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Three Arms: "In 1838 John and William Wells of Back Harbour, Twillingate built a fishing room on Three Arms Island for the summer fishery. Then, in 1841, John Wells moved his household to Three Arms. In short order others followed, including Solomon Strong (who subsequently married Wells' sister), the family of William Vincent of Twillingate and James Norris, an Irishman. ... Wells had built up his premises to a small mercantile establishment, which employed a small schooner to trade with fishermen in western Notre Dame Bay and built fishing boats under the direction of Strong. ... In the earliest days of Three Arms John Wells is said to have conducted a night school for the children ...". John H. Strong, Wells Family Anecdotes: The Wells family, like the Strongs, are said to have come from Ringwood, Hampshire, England in 1793 (John Burge Wells' notebook). The first Wells we have record of was John Burge Wells. He married Elizabeth Budgell (nee Strong) a sister of Solomon, on September 2, 1838 at Twillingate. Mrs. Tinkham was the person with whom Bertha and Irene Booth went to live when their father, Francis Booth, left their mother, Florence Carolyn Hyde. Marion would have been the children's great aunt. Lived at 16 C Street, Manchester, NH for 27 years prior to her death. Previously lived at Georgetown, Mass. No record of her living with her parents in any census before 1881. Was age 24 at 1881 census. "Canada Census, 1881," index, Bertha Hyde in household of Mason Hyde, Nepean, Carleton, Ontario, Canada; citing p. 2; Library and Archives Canada film number C-13231, Public Archives, Ottawa, Ontario; FHL microfilm 1375867. The age given is incorrect since she would have been 32, not 24 in 1881. However, her death record shows that her birthdate was 1849. At time of her death Feb 28, 1918 she was living at 16 C Street, Manchester, N.H. Married to Edwin Tinkham. Her birth is shown as Jan 23 1849.
