| 1003 | John H. Strong, Marsh Family Anecdotes: Matilda (Marsh) Strong, my mother, was raised by her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Andrew Anstey. Her widowed mother was unable to take care of her when she went to Little Bay Island to work as a housekeeper for George Wiseman, whom she later married. The Ansteys were able to give her a better education than most people of that day. Matilda became a teacher and, according to her autograph album seems to have taught in Cat Harbour (1907), Three Arms (1909), Musgrave Town (1910) and Jackson's Cove. While at Three Arms she boarded with Rebecca Strong, my father's aunt and they met while he was visiting there. | Strong, John Howard (I543)

| 1005 | John is thought to have married twice. and that Elizabeth (Eliza) was his daughter by his first wife. We are not sure which wife Emily was from. RnR's diary for Monday September 16, 1940: I spent the whole of the morning visiting. I visited six families. After dinner I went visiting again in South Beaumont. I was put across the south side of Beaumont South by Randolph Rideout. From then I visited nine families. At Mrs. Jacob Hewlett’s I had an interesting visit. She was Emily Rowsell, daughter of John Rowsell, who was the second eldest son of John Rowsell, who was the brother of William Rowsell, who was my great-grandfather, and Mrs. Emily Hewlett’s great uncle. Fanny Foster (my uncle Israel’s wife) she says, was the daughter of Eliza who was the daughter of John Rowsell by his first wife. Mrs. Hewlett made the wedding cake and wedding clothes for my aunt Fanny Rowsell. Mrs. Hewlett was at one time Mrs. Robert Colbourne, was at Tilt Cove when dad and Uncle Israel used to come ashore there. | Rowsell, John (I3669)

Source (2): Milt Anstey, Facebook post April 14, 2023 in Rowsells of Newfoundland Facebook group. The gravestones of John and Emma Rowsell are at South Brook Rowsell cemetery at Halls Bay, Nfld. (Source: http://lloydrosewell.tripod.com/rowsellhistoricphotosanddocuments/id2.html From anonymous poster in Facebook group Rowsells of Newfoundland: "John was likely a close relative of the original George Rousell b. 1726, original N.D.Bay Henry Rousell (said to be father of George), and Thomas Rowsell who was beheaded by the Beothucks in 1789. Entries from Slade Ledgers for 1794 and 1795 state that son John Rousal charged goods to the account of his father. This could possibly be John of Halls Bay who married Emma." Storey: Thomas Rowsell was killed by Indians. RNR: Had a brother, James?, who was killed by Indians at South Brook, Hall's Bay. LR: born ca.1773. Died Nov 4, 1861, L.T. LR: BIble gives a DOB of Oct 31 1799 for a Thomas Rowsell who died at L.T. in 1876 at age 78. The Church of England register for Twillingate 1816 - 1824 show adult baptisms for Thomas, George, William and Joseph Rowsell on 27 August 1821. It also shows the baptism of four children to John and Amy Rowsell on the same date. These children were James, Henry, Sarah and Mary. If Amy and Emma are the same person, then these likely are the baptisms for the children of John and Emma that are recorded in the Halls Bay Rowsell Bible. | 1019 | Known as Joseph (Hugh) Booth in some trees. An entry for a James Booth, son of Hugh and Jane, was found in the Ontario Marriage Registration records. (see below). However, if true, this would mean that he was born in 1839 between Robert (1837) and Leander (1840). Is this possible? All the rest of their children are at least two years apart. 24/12 (Leeds & Grenville): James BOOTH, 33, malster, Ireland, Dunham Quebec, s/o Hugh & Jane, married Grace COWAN, 26, Ottawa, same, d/o John & Catherine, witn: Henry & Mary COWAN of Ottawa, 22 Aug 1872 at Prescott The entry for the baptism of son Leander says that he is the 4th son of Hugh and Jane. This lends credence to the record of James as a son between Robert and Leander. The fact that the death registration notice for Hugh says that James Booth, son, was a witness, proves that he did have a son James. 1861 Census lists family as: Hugh, age 60, born Ireland Jane, age 50, born Ireland Robert, age 24, born Ireland James, age 21, born Ireland Leander, age 19, born Canada Levi, age 17, born Canada Rufus, age 15, born Canada Joseph, age 13, born Canada Margrit, age 11, born Canada Mary, age 18, born Canada Sarah, age 7, born Canada 1871 Census lists family as: James Booth | Booth, Hugh (I133)
